The Salvation Army will hold an Angel Tree distribution event at Kahului Walmart from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Close to 1,800 children are registered to participate in this weekend’s event, according to The Salvation Army.
The Angel Tree program connects donors in the community with the Christmas wish lists of children and adults facing financial hardships. The gifts are purchased by donors and distributed to families to place under their tree.
Walmart has donated more than 30,000 toys to The Salvation Army to be distributed to children up to age 15 this holiday season. The distribution event this weekend will take place at Walmart’s specially decorated “Winter Wonderland” scene.
“Our hearts and thoughts continue to go out to those affected by the Maui fires,” Chris Pierce, store manager for Maui Walmart, said in a news release. “Through the years, Walmart has been so embraced by the Maui community, it is our honor to be able to give back to our neighbors during this time of need and to be allowed to bring some comfort and joy during the holidays with the donation of these toys.”
For many Maui families, the Angel Tree distribution event is a lifeline, ensuring that their children experience the joy of the holiday season despite the challenges they face throughout the year, The Salvation Army said. This year the need is greater than ever after the Aug. 8 wildfires displaced thousands of residents and led to job losses and business closures.
“Financial difficulties should never stand in the way of a child’s joy during the holidays,” said Charmaine Hauanio-Kuewa, divisional director of development for The Salvation Army Hawaiian and Pacific Islands Division. “The Angel Tree Distribution event is a testament to our commitment to helping Maui families overcome these challenges and we are grateful for the generosity and long-time collaboration we share with Walmart to lift the spirits of our community.”
The Salvation Army said Friday that due to overwhelming response, registration is now closed. Toys will only be distributed to those who have previously registered and have appointments.
