A new Mobile Hygiene Unit, Ka La Hiki Ola, to be used by Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers to aid homeless people in South Maui was blessed last week.
Funded by a county grant, the facility will provide toilets, showers and a place to receive donations of toiletries, clothing, food and other necessities. There also will be internet connections so homeless people can apply for jobs and search for housing, the organization that aids homeless people on Maui said.
The goal of the unit is to help enhance the quality of life of homeless people, while identifying needs and offering referrals, including for permanent housing, the organization’s news release said.
The blessing of the unit at Ka Hale A Ke Ola’s Wailuku facility occurred Sept. 24.
Ka Hale A Ke Ola, established three decades ago, has facilities in Wailuku and Lahaina that provide safe and secure emergency shelter and meals as well as transitional housing that assists 1,500 people on Maui annually.
“KHAKO addresses the complex issues associated with homelessness by promoting self-sufficiency and positive lifestyle changes,” said Monique Yamashita, executive director of the organization. “Our new playground gives keiki and their families a sense of community as we work with them to find permanent housing or provide other essential services and resources.”
