BOISE, Idaho — Central District Health reports that bats in Valley and Boise Counties have now tested positive for Rabies, joining Ada County which had its first positive test of the year two weeks ago.
The first bat was discovered on July 21, in a cabin in McCall by a vaccinated dog. None of the people staying in the cabin touched the bat and it was discovered prior to anyone sleeping there. The bat found in Boise County tested positive on July 25, and was discovered in a residence.
Rabies is a fatal viral illness in people and in pets. CDH strongly encourages anyone who has come into contact with a bat should seek timely medical treatment. Rabies infection is 100% fatal in people and animals. These are the second and third bats to test positive for rabies this year in Idaho.
